Community

Dewees Island consists of a small community of avid naturalists and environmentally conscious people who've decided that living in a sensitive barrier island demanded attention to the original vegetation and inhabitants.

The island has only 150 homesites, no paved roads, and stringent building codes that demand a small environmental footprint. All the houses are nestled in the island forests as not to encroach on the three miles of beachfront.

Dewees does not host any restaurants, shopping centers, or large entertainment venues. Instead, community members attend scheduled community events at the Nature Center or Clubhouse. Mostly however, this community enjoys the daily “accidental” friendly gatherings that can happen on the ferry, fishing docks, gazebo, beaches or even stopped along the road for an impromptu wildlife sighting.
