FEBRUARY 28, 2019 – Two books – Hillbilly Elegy AND An American Marriage, led by Gary McGraw and Laura Davis, see the notes below:
Dewees Book Club Feb 28th at 6:30 PM
Laura Davis and Gary McGraw will be discussing two books: “Hillybilly Elegy” by J.D.Vance and “An American Marriage” by Tayari Jones. Both books were on the 2018 New York Times Bestseller list and describe two families searching for the American dream. You don’t need to read both of them.
“Hillybilly Elegy” This is a true story of an Appalachian, white, working class family telling what a class/social decline feels like. It describes the urgent and troubling story about the loss of the American dream for a large segment of this country.
“An American Marriage” was also on Oprah’s 2018 Book Club Selection. Two newlyweds are ripped apart by circumstances neither could have imagined. Roy (a young black man) is arrested for a crime he didn’t commit. This love story is an insightful look into their hearts and minds.
The next book club meeting will be held at Rebecca Eggers house, the night before the Annual POA meeting begins:
Thursday, MARCH 21, 2019 – Desert Solitaire, by Edward Abbey (with optional second book to read and discuss, recommended by Rebecca – The Tiger, by John Valiant), led by Rebecca Eggers
