Nolan Schillerstrom, the Audubon South Carolina’s Coastal Coordinator will be on Island Friday to share his knowledge and passion for shorebirds with the Dewees Community. He will host several events, plan to come to all or pick your favorite.
Beachfront Birding & ID @ 12:30 – 2:30 pm
Learn how to ID the birds that are common on the beach & in the Impoundment at high tide. All skill levels welcome. Bring your own binoculars; we have a few pairs you are welcome to borrow. Meet at the Landings Building, the group will then travel to either the Impoundment or the beach via Huyler House Walk.
Shorebird Stewardship Training @ 3:30 – 5:30 pm
Beach with a purpose this summer and be trained as a Shorebird Steward! Shorebird Stewards will learn how to educate beachgoers on how to share the beach with nesting & resting coastal birds. This training includes shorebird and seabird identification, fun facts, safety on the beach, as well as how to talk to people in a positive way on how to share the beach with imperiled coastal birds. Please meet at the Huyler House.
Shorebird ID Presentation @ 4:30 pm
Shorebird populations have declined by 70% over the last 40 years and one of the biggest threats to these birds in South Carolina is human disturbance. Learn about shorebird and seabird identification, fun facts, and how to share the beach with imperiled coastal birds. Please meet at the Huyler House.
Happy Hour @ 5:30 pm
Meet & greet the Audubon Shorebirds Stewards who will be volunteering their time this summer to educate beachgoers about Shorebirds. BYOB & a nibble to share.
